I’ve had the pleasure to work with the amazing nutritionista Meghan Telpner from Toronto, Ontario. Specifically, I made a custom straw designed with her colors in mind. (check out the picture below!) It is incredibly fun and inspiring to create this special piece of functional art for Meghan. Not only do I work with Meghan but I follow her personally to see what is new in the world of nutrition.
Meghan recently penned a book entitled “UnDiet” and she was kind enough to include me in the list of people allowed to preview the book and review it. And review it I did! This book is written as a handbook on how to live. People who are curious about my lifestyle; why I don’t eat fast food or pure junk (even as a so-called “treat”), or wonder why bowel movements matter so much, or the theory that runs my business – there is no throw “away”, I can hand this book to them and save my breath.
The blueberry pancakes are out of this world! If you have pancake obsessed little kids like I do they won’t even notice that these are great for them. And her syrup blew my mind, so simple and nutritious – why didn’t I think of that!
Meghan has hit the nail on the head with this book. Quit your crazy diet and just get this book, change your lifestyle and change yourself and the world around you.
Below is my interview with Meghan, it’s a fun one so you have to read it! And then comment and tell me the wackiest diet you’ve ever been on (or why you don’t “diet”). One person is going to win a copy of Meghan’s book and a glass straw from me! ~ Daedra

Now for a few questions about the book:
I have my own favorite recipes in the UnDiet book but what is your personal favorite? Is it your favorite because it was easy to create or because it tastes so great?
“There are just over 40 recipes that cover everything including almond milk, granola, oatmeal, and power smoothies, soda alternatives, homemade crackers and main course meals like my Life Affirming Chili and Booyizzle White Bean Green Curry. There are great desserts and treats like the Almond Power Cookies, Almond Butter Cups and amazing Cinnamon rolls. Everything is plant-based and gluten-free. My favorite though? Yowza- that’s like choosing a favourite sunset, or favourite child. The recipes I shared are all my favourites- they are my own staples, what I make often and what I make when friends come to dinner. I wanted UnDiet readers to gain confidence in the kitchen and have their creations work- so they feel encouraged that the whole UnDiet lifestyle will work. What’s your favorite?” My favorite is the veggie rice wraps. I stocked up on rice wraps and make these a few times a week for lunch. I love them! ~DS
What inspired you to create UnDiet? How long had you dreamed about it before it came to fruition?
“I have always wanted to write a book. I LOVE writing. I attempted a few times. The first book was a love story. The second book I called “Three years, nine jobs, my career in advertising” but that was too stressful to relive. UnDiet came about, very organically (no pun intended). It is really a culmination of the lifestyle and philosophy I developed beginning with my diagnosis with Crohn’s all the way through to being a teacher of this knowledge and these practices. When my editor called, out of the blue, over two years ago to talk about what my first book looked like in my mind, the vision was clear.
The inspiration- well it is the thousands of students I have had over the last five years that inspired me. I was on the slow transition plan and it becomes hard to remember what it was like to feel totally confused and overwhelmed. Every time a new person stepped into my kitchen or joined one of my online classes, there was a whole new set of questions. I wanted to write a book that answered those questions. This was why it was so important to include not just what we should eat, do, think and all of that, but also the how to make it happen and why we should even care to try.”
I see so many people in my social circle who try different diets and they work temporarily but they always end up failing. I love to hear success stories, do you have any personal accounts of how UnDiet has helped readers?
“I have loads! If you go on to instagram or twitter and search #UnDiet- the success is right there. If someone makes a smoothie for breakfast, drinks a little more water, or even ditches their plastic water bottle or straw for a glass version, or ditch the diet soda and fake butter products- that to me is success. We get so tied to a goal weight, or a size of jeans- but that type of success doesn’t work. If it did, we’d all be right where we want to be. Success in the UnDiet sense is really simply- just doing the best we can with every decision we need to make. So UnDiet success is about living in a real, health promoting way ongoing. Instead of profiling UnDiet success stories on the blog, we’re sharing UnDiet Living In Action stories- this is where lasting health is going to come in. And health is the goal.”
If I’m feeling down I notice a huge difference if I eat a certain vegetable, it literally will pick me right up off the floor! Is there one food that can do this for you? If so, what is it?
“I know I will sound like a total nutrition dorkus malorkus- but green juice is like an injection of life straight to the source of my energy. When I sip up my green juice every morning I feel like my cells are giving me a standing ovation, pulling out their pom-poms and happy dancing, back flipping and high-fiving. Our cells know when they’re being taken care of and that moves up into all part of us, mood included. Eating vegetables, drinking clean water, eating a home cooked meal at a table intended for dining- these are all signs we are fuelling our life and what we get out of our life when we do this- wow! It’s not just our mood that picks up, our whole life changes and it’s so simple!” BTW – I’m a even bigger dorkus malorkus because my pick me up food is raw cauliflower. I get royally depressed if I can’t find a organic one at the market! ~DS
Childhood obesity is at a all time high, do you think the time will come when you will write a book geared toward children? (My kids love your food, but not every kid is conditioned to eat this way)
“Maybe one day if I have my own. Most of my friends are now mom’s and I have six nieces and nephews and childhood obesity really doesn’t have a lot to do with the kids. The kids aren’t buying the cheese snacks, or the fruit juices or the cakes and cookies- at least not at home. I know a lot of kids who are fed crap at home, as an occasional “treat”, and don’t really get the moderation thing, and kids who have been taught about food- not as a reward for good behaviour but as a connection to their body and the earth and it’s a completely different relationship. Until parents really get what UnDieting is, the traps of Healthwashing and the fact that calories don’t count, they will have a losing battle in getting their kids to eat better.”
After finishing this book are you inspired to write more (You MUST have more to say!)?
“YES! Book two was in the works from the day I handed in my manuscript for book one. I have lots to day, Lots and lots! Even my 1,500 blog posts haven’t covered it all!”
